Last Minute Events at Sedition!

So. First things first. I know we promised that we would never spam you with undesired emails and even when we did it would only be once a week. Sorry. Sometimes events get organized at the last minute and these two are both super important and happening this weekend.

...So come on out to learn about and support labor struggles in Mexico and to demand immigrants' rights in the USA!

Sedition Books is located at 901 Richmond Avenue (That's one block east of Montrose) and you can call or check out our website for more info: 713.523.0807 or www.seditionbooks.org

As always. All events are free but we can always use your donations for the infoshop and the touring speakers.

The Economic Crisis & How It is Effecting Maquiladora Workers:
A Talk by TRW Worker Ernesto Lizcano

In response to plans to relocate and downsize the workforce at TRW, an automotive parts manufacturer in Reynosa, Mexico, the Coalition for Justice in the Maquiladoras has organized a speaking tour and a series of protests. On Sunday September 13th at 7:00 PM join Sedition Books in welcoming TRW worker Ernesto Lizcano.

Multinational corporations such as TRW, which is a US corporation based in Livonia, Michigan, have profited from exploiting cheap labor, thanks to free trade agreements. After many years of phenomenal profits, TRW is laying off workers - without the severance payments that the workers are owed by law.

“If they made their profits with our labor over the years, now they should be accountable to us.” Ernesto Lizcano, TRW Worker from Reynosa

Ernesto and his co-workers faced many challenges on the factory floor for many years. Recently, TRW relocated workers to a different facility on the opposite side of the city. The problem was that TRW provided no transportation, childcare, or consideration for seniority. Ernesto and more than 600 workers formed the TRW Workers Coalition to defend their rights. Ernesto was elected to the Coalition leadership by his co-workers and for this reason TRW management in Reynosa fired him and blacklisted him as trouble maker. Although he was fired, Ernesto continues to be active in the Workers’ Coalition fight for justice. Ernesto is traveling across the US and Canada calling for international solidarity on his way to a meeting with TRW executives on September 16th.

Background:
Joe Arpaio is the racist sheriff of Maricopa County in Arizona. He has various lawsuits pending about his unfair and inhumane treatment of Latino people in his county. Arpaio's department houses prisoners in tents, makes them appear before media TV cameras wearing pink underwear, shackles them in chain gangs, and is accused of trespassing into neighboring jurisdictions to unlawfully dump immigrants at the border for deportation. Traffic violators and day laborers are Arpaio's main targets.

He will be in Houston selling his book and fund-raising for the local racist hate group - Border Watch.

Come out and tell Arpaio what we think of his racist practices!
