December Events at Sedition plus Antonia Juhasz Tonight at Houston Inst. for Culture

Hey all

We here at Sedition are very excited to be co-hosting the Antonia Juhasz talk this evening at the Houston Institute for culture. So excited that we will be there with a slew of her books and other great reading material for your bedside table. Come on out to Telephone road tonight at 7:00 pm. It should be a very interesting talk.

We have a boatload of other events at the infoshop this week and next so be sure to come down and check out the goings on at Sedition. We are very excited by the all day Saturday event to raise awareness and funds about the situation in Honduras. So excited we got ahead of ourselves and named the co-sponsor incorrectly. Our apologies. The group that is co-sponsoring the event is called Hondurenos Por la Democracia (Hondurans for Democracy). Then on Sunday Scott Parkin will be regaling us with information about the fight against Mountain-top Removal Coal Mining in Appalachia and on Monday Simon Sedillo will host a workshop on community organizing against neoliberal displacement! Now that's an information filled week.

Sedition Books is still located at 901 Richmond Avenue (That's one block east of Montrose) and you can call or check out our website for more info: 713.523.0807 or www.seditionbooks.org

As always. All events are free but we can always use your donations for the infoshop and the touring bands and speakers.

TYRANNY OF OIL: THE WORLD'S MOST POWERFUL INDUSTRY--and What We Must Do to Stop It

Author and Activist Antonia Juhasz will be giving a talk on The Tyranny of Oil, climate policy talks in Copenhagen and the "petroleum-powered smoke screen" Juhasz discusses the history of successful organized resistance to the power of Big Oil, from the protests that led to Standard Oil’s breakup 100 years ago, to powerful movements today for climate justice and an end to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Juhasz offers real policy solutions for ending Big Oil’s control, including breaking up the largest companies and a host of stricter regulations on the industry’s activities from oil futures trading, to refineries, to when and where the industry can explore and drill.

The Tyranny of Oil is the hardest-hitting exposé of the oil industry in decades. Juhasz investigates the true state of the U.S. oil industry-uncovering its virtually unparalleled global power, influence over our elected officials and its lack of regulatory oversight.

Antonia Juhasz is on the National Advisory Board of Iraq Veterans Against the War and The (True Cost of) Chevron Program Director at Global Exchange in San Francisco. She's the author of The Tyranny of Oil: The World's Most Powerful Industry--And What We Must Do To Stop It, just newly released in paperback, updated with a new preface on Big Oil and the Presidency of Barack Obama.

T.e.j.a.s (Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services) and Sedition Books are pleased to co-sponsor this event.

Justice for Appalachia Speaking Event & Video on Struggle to End Mountaintop Removal

Scott Parkin from Rainforest Action Network and Rising Tide North America will be discussing the direct action campaign in southern West Virginia and other parts of Appalachia currently being waged to end mountaintop removal.

Mountaintop removal is a form of strip mining that literally explodes the tops off of mountains to get at seams of coal. So far over a million acres of forest have been destroyed, more than 1,000 miles of rivers and streams buried and numerous mountain communities harmed by extraction and waste disposal.

Since February, over 120 people working with coalfield residents and direct action groups like Climate Ground Zero and Mountain Justice have been arrested shutting down mountaintop removal operations in the Coal River Valley of southern West Virginia.

Evening will include a short video, talk and discussion.

The Politics of Displacement and Community Self Determination: A Workshop with Simon Sedillo

Simón Sedillo is a community rights defense organizer and film maker. He has spent the last 7 years documenting, producing and teaching community based video documentation in Mexico and the US.

This workshop identifies several institutions that threaten the lives of people everywhere. From banks and corporations to non-profits and universities, what role do these institutions have in making the poor stay poor, while allowing the rich to get richer? This workshop shows how the political devaluation of traditional forms of self governance and self determination has led to the degradation of entire sectors of society. Finally this workshop shares indigenous strategies for community based self determination in guiding struggles for urban community liberation.

As part of the presentation--Sedillo will screen his new short film. "La Familia Raices" is a short documentary on the family and Son Jarocho band ¨Los Raices¨ from Oaxaca. The Raices Family play traditional Son Jaracho music in support of the Oaxacan people's social movement. This traditional Afro-indigenous music originates in the state of Veracruz and is also traditionally played in some parts of the state of Oaxaca. This musical tradition is based upon popular education, collective organizing, and long term self determination for its musicians and instrument makers.
