Upcoming Events at Sedition Books-Mid January
It's 2009. A chance for a fresh start to the new year! Course with the ongoing conflict in Palestine, the economy in shambles, the border wall still going up , police shootings and prison overpopulation it feels an awful lot like last year.
Come out to Sedition this week to find out about the ongoing local and international struggles against the prison industrial complex, the war in Gaza and global warming.
Sedition has just received a slew of new and inexpensive anarchist libros en Español (Por ejemplo--Por qué perdimos la guerra: Una contribución a la historia de la tragedia española y "Que es el Anarquismo?) and some great EZLN calendars.
As always all events are free, but donations help keep Sedition going. Get there early to browse the infoshop.

Houston Anarchist Black Cross Meeting
Join Houston Anarchist Black Cross Sunday, January 18th, 2pm as we discuss the fate of Captive Voices, a publication edited, written by and for prisoners. For several years now, Houston ABC has been responsible for printing and distributing "Captive Voices" to over 200 people around the world free of charge.
We need to assess the future of this project - whether there are enough people and resources to continue distribution from Houston, or whether we need to find another group elsewhere that can take it on. We need your help! If you are interested in putting some time, resources or ideas into this effort then come to this meeting.

Sedition Movie Night
Sophie Scholl: The Final Days (2005, 120min)
In 1943, as Hitler continues to wage war across Europe, a group of college students mount an underground resistance movement in Munich. Dedicated expressly to the downfall of the monolithic Third Reich war machine, they call themselves the White Rose. One of its few female members, Sophie Scholl is captured during a dangerous mission to distribute pamphlets on campus with her brother Hans. Unwavering in her convictions and loyalty to the White Rose, her cross-examination by the Gestapo quickly escalates into a searing test of wills as Scholl delivers a passionate call to freedom and personal responsibility that is both haunting and timeless.

Palestine 101 - an introduction to the conflict in Palestine/Israel
A workshop giving some context to the current conflict in Gaza from a radical social justice perspective
Featuring:
Hadeel Assali, organizer of the Houston Palestine Film Festival and long time Palestine Solidarity Activist
Ala Alazzeh, graduate student of anthropology at Rice University and Palestinian Activist
Israel's attacks on the Gaza strip have killed more than 1,000 people.
World governments are sitting on their hands--refusing to intervene.
If you are trying to figure out what the hell is going on by consuming mainstream American Media, you are probably very confused.
Students for a Democratic Society-UH have invited some local Palestinian organizers and scholars to break down the history and social geography to help explain how it has resulted in this situation. They will also help chart a path towards justice and peace in Palestine. Following the presentation we'll have questions and a discussion about what can be done locally.

Rising Tide Houston and Global Justice for Animals & the Environment present a screening of:
A Really Inconvenient Truth
In this film, "eco-socialist" professor Joel Kovel takes on Al Gore's reformist, pro-capitalist climate activism; and explains some of the ways our current economic system is inherently unsustainable.
"What is 'really inconvenient' is the truth that global warming is directly related to the uncontrolled growth of the dominant world capitalist system — a system in which Al Gore has played a leading role, for which reason he avoids the heart of the matter and distracts us with moral uplift and technological fixes. Joel Kovel insists, rather, that we need to address — and transform — the basic social dynamics that lead to the regime of cancerous production and mindless consumption.
Joel Kovel is author of The Enemy of Nature, 2d edition (Zed: 2007) and editor of the quarterly journal Capitalism Nature Socialism. In 2000 he sought the presidential nomination of the US Green Party."

This screening is part of a bi-weekly film/educational event series focused on various ecological crises from a radical perspective. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. Contact: houstonrt (at) riseup (dot) net
