Sedition Books

Hey Seditious Friends, We've been closed a little more than normal in the last few weeks, so if you've been by, we apologize. On the other hand, think about volunteering to help keep the doors open more consistently! If you want to volunteer, send an e-mail to seditioncollective@yahoo.com ("Volunteer" in the subject line), and we'll hook you up. We ask you to shadow four shifts before opening the store on your own. Other volunteer opportunities are making and distributing flyers, organizing books, and setting up events. Our collective meetings are still every Monday at 8 pm, so we invite those interested to attend. We're also always in need of events, so don't be shy to ask about doing an event here. Speakers, concerts, skill shares, you name it- just give us a little advance notice! So swing by the store, stay for an event, or come in to help out!! September Events Volunteer Training Sunday, September 11 12 Noon (should end around 1, but stay as long as you want!) We'll be doing a training on how to staff the store. After coming to the training, we ask you to shadow an experienced volunteer for a few shifts until you can apply for a key and open the store yourself. There's lots of things to do around the store, so the more hands the better! Know Your Rights With The Police Monday, September 12 7-9 PM When can the police stop me? Where can they search? And how can I answer an officer's questions? Come find the answers to these and other questions at this educational event covering your rights when encountering the cops on the streets, in your car, at demonstrations, and on public transport. Presented by Brian Harrison, graduate from the University of Houston Law Center. Friday Night Movie "V for Vendetta" Friday, September 16 8 pm Not to be shown as a statement of our political ideology, we thought we'd show some blockbusters here to unwind on a Friday night. While a favorite amongst many radicals, "V for Vendetta" does not come without controversy. After the movie we'll be talking about how the film portrays direct action, propaganda of the deed and struggle against fascism, as well as its celebration of "Supermen" and how it perpetuates traditional narratives with regards to the treatment of women. Dinner and a Movie "The Chicago Ten" Wednesday, September 21 Dinner 7:30, Movie 8 pm Blending archival footage with modern animation, this documentary examines the massive protests besetting the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention, and the courtroom trial of several activists and participants in the aftermath. Among those featured are Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin, who were charged with inciting a riot, Tom Hayden, and Bobby Seale. $5 suggested donation. Tentative Events (we'll send a confirmation when we know for sure!) Report Back from Tar Sands Actions in DC Proposed date: Thursday, September 15 @ 7 Local Activists went to DC recently to protest the proposed tar sands pipeline from Canada to Texas. To the Houston Radical Community and Supporters of Sedition Books-

May Events (Continued)

And here’s a couple extra:

Sunday, May 29th, 7pm - Work Sucks! BBQ & Screening

Join us for a delicious vegetarian BBQ and screening of short videos, including "Work Sucks!"

Footage and animation illustrate these essays that analyze the economic and cultural system we live in from a "Left Libertarian" perspective, and lay out ideas on how a stateless society can be organized free from market economics and social hierarchies.

March at Sedition

Whats up y’all? Sedition is kickin’ as usual, and as always, we appreciate your support and hope that our events are suiting your needs. If you are new to our list, we are a radical, community owned and ran infoshop serving the communities needs for a liberated space in Houston.

Down to business… as usual we are always looking for new volunteers to staff the space, and to keep it up and running. If you are interested in volunteering, Please come by sedition and leave your information with the folks at the counter.

January at Sedition Books

January 7th 2011
Greetings Friends of Sedition,

Thank you for all your support throughout 2010. As Sedition grows and changes we hope you'll all come be a part of the project in your own way and utilize our resources at Sedition Books in 2011.

If you haven't been in lately, we've built an internet bar where the reading couch was to allow for more access to the Wi-Fi and two community computers we offer.

As always, our library continues to develop - stay tuned for the new library cards and updates to the library.

December Events At Sedition

The weekly schedule of volunteer shifts here at the infoshop has been looking a

November-Early December at Sedition Books

***** NOVEMBER – EARLY DECEMBER AT SEDITION BOOKS *****

Greetings comrades…

We have got a great lineup of events this month and heading into December. But first, a few things…

The weekly schedule of volunteer shifts here at the infoshop has been looking a bit scary in recent weeks. Our apologies to anyone who has showed up during open hours to find us closed. Keeping a bookstore, library and event space open in our free time is not a task the collective can do on its own, so we’re always looking for new volunteers to help staff the space!

Sedition's Big Move

Sedition Books is happy to announce its next venture. Together with the Real School/ Dragon Valley, HEAL (Health, Education, Advocacy & Literacy), and BIRTH, we will be purchasing a new space with room to grow. Instead of going to banks and landlords, we’re looking for radical investors to be reimbursed through our rent, leaving us someday with an autonomous radical space, owned solely by our organizations.

October at Sedition Books

October has descended upon us….

In concert with our diabolical aims of building an army of the undead to devour the flesh of the unfortunately not undead capitalist vampires that rule our dying world before we’re all annihilated by resource wars, fascist repression and ecological meltdown; we have a great lineup of events this month, so cheer up!

September – Early October at Sedition Books

***September – Early October at Sedition Books***

Howdy, Comrades!

As you may have heard, Sedition has had a challenging last few weeks.

We’ve been broken into and robbed, slapped with fines from the city of Houston, and had been experiencing a prolonged absence of volunteers with available time (article here: http://houston.indymedia.org/news/2010/09/71170.php).

No need to be alarmed…as always, we are persevering and fighting on.
