Hey Seditious Friends,
We've been closed a little more than normal in the last few weeks, so if you've been by, we apologize.
On the other hand, think about volunteering to help keep the doors open more consistently! If you want to volunteer, send an e-mail to seditioncollective@yahoo.com ("Volunteer" in the subject line), and we'll hook you up. We ask you to shadow four shifts before opening the store on your own. Other volunteer opportunities are making and distributing flyers, organizing books, and setting up events.
Our collective meetings are still every Monday at 8 pm, so we invite those interested to attend.
We're also always in need of events, so don't be shy to ask about doing an event here. Speakers, concerts, skill shares, you name it- just give us a little advance notice!
So swing by the store, stay for an event, or come in to help out!!
September Events
Volunteer Training
Sunday, September 11
12 Noon (should end around 1, but stay as long as you want!)
We'll be doing a training on how to staff the store. After coming to the training, we ask you to shadow an experienced volunteer for a few shifts until you can apply for a key and open the store yourself. There's lots of things to do around the store, so the more hands the better!
Know Your Rights With The Police
Monday, September 12
7-9 PM
When can the police stop me?
Where can they search?
And how can I answer an officer's questions?
Come find the answers to these and other questions at this educational event covering your rights when encountering the cops on the streets, in your car, at demonstrations, and on public transport.
Presented by Brian Harrison,
graduate from the University of Houston Law Center.
Friday Night Movie
"V for Vendetta"
Friday, September 16
8 pm
Not to be shown as a statement of our political ideology, we thought we'd show some blockbusters here to unwind on a Friday night.
While a favorite amongst many radicals, "V for Vendetta" does not come without controversy. After the movie we'll be talking about how the film portrays direct action, propaganda of the deed and struggle against fascism, as well as its celebration of "Supermen" and how it perpetuates traditional narratives with regards to the treatment of women.
Dinner and a Movie
"The Chicago Ten"
Wednesday, September 21
Dinner 7:30, Movie 8 pm
Blending archival footage with modern animation, this documentary examines the massive protests besetting the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention, and the courtroom trial of several activists and participants in the aftermath.
Among those featured are Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin, who were charged with inciting a riot, Tom Hayden, and Bobby Seale.
$5 suggested donation.
Tentative Events
(we'll send a confirmation when we know for sure!)

Hey all
Hope April finds you all up to your elbows in Houston dirt, watching your tomatoes, beans and basil grow. Sedition is watching the calendar get fuller and fuller. Which, as they say in the business, is a good thing.
This week the collective is happy to announce a slew of events organized by the RAD womyn’s group. So all you womyn identified folks out there, take a look and see about checking out one or more event this month.
Hey
I know we said we wouldn't spam you with a mountain of email, but this one is a special case. Our friends over at the Skydive Art Space were forced to cancel their Friday night screening of Torre Bela, an almost impossible to find documentary about a land takeover during the 1975 revolution in Portugal. Thus this announcement of a last minute screening to take place at Sedition Books tonight complete with an introduction by a Portuguese filmmaker who is making a follow up documentary interviewing participants in the original land takeover.
Hey y'all
First things first. We are sad to tell you that we have to cancel the Jessie Williams show on Friday. Seems that she and her Boozehounds have been unable to find a westbound train out of the Pensacola yard. While we admire them for their low carbon footprint transportation choices, we sure do wish they were here.
Hey all,
That's right, this weekend we get to celebrate the equinox. And what better way than getting together with our pal Merriwether for an afternoon stroll through the Montrose picking the tasty treats growing in the cracks in the sidewalk.
Then later on in the week we'll have a pair of films, one a recent comedy from Bolivia and the other an ancient sci-fi classic from Germany.
To top it all off, next Friday Jessie Williams will be at Sedition. If you like the folk punk genre, this show is not to be missed. So mark your calendars and bring someone to dance with!
Hey folks,
Hope the middle of March finds you well. Enjoying the great out of doors. Soaking up the sun. Nice.
There's a great way to support Sedition Books, The Last Organic Outpost and Rebel Roots all in one fell swoop and in the balmy outdoors to boot. This Saturday, come out to the screening of The Garden, a documentary about the struggle to keep one of the largest green spaces in South Central LA from being developed--sounds a bit familiar to the situation at Alabama and Dunlavey don't it? Get there early if you want to snack on the great vegan vittles provided by Rebel Roots.
Hey folks,
The pages on the calendar keep flipping by like an Orson Welles film. March already. Damn. Thanks for coming out to the events last week. The Peter Gelderloos critique of democracy was a perfect lead in to tonight's What is Anarchism roundtable discussion, but even if you missed the talk on Monday the discussion tonight will undoubtedly be engaging.
Hey all,
Wow. What a full week we just had. First the Plant Walk with Meriwether, then the poetry filled John Ross reading and ending up with Ashanti Alston and a full house at the SHAPE Center. Huge thanks to the more than 150 people who attended those events and to the folks who helped organize them all.
Hey y'all
Sedition is hosting a lot of events in the next few weeks. We hope you can come out to a few of them. Tonight we are screening Corazon del Tiempo. A Houston premiere of this 2009 film. And tomorrow radical theater, Friday there are a ton of things to choose from. I say go to the Gringoyo screening at Rice then run over to Sedition to hear locals Cory Derden and Air Castle Mystery Solved open for Malcolm Rollick.
