Sedition Books
Hey Seditious Friends,
We've been closed a little more than normal in the last few weeks, so if you've been by, we apologize.
On the other hand, think about volunteering to help keep the doors open more consistently! If you want to volunteer, send an e-mail to seditioncollective@yahoo.com ("Volunteer" in the subject line), and we'll hook you up. We ask you to shadow four shifts before opening the store on your own. Other volunteer opportunities are making and distributing flyers, organizing books, and setting up events.
Our collective meetings are still every Monday at 8 pm, so we invite those interested to attend.
We're also always in need of events, so don't be shy to ask about doing an event here. Speakers, concerts, skill shares, you name it- just give us a little advance notice!
So swing by the store, stay for an event, or come in to help out!!
September Events
Volunteer Training
Sunday, September 11
12 Noon (should end around 1, but stay as long as you want!)
We'll be doing a training on how to staff the store. After coming to the training, we ask you to shadow an experienced volunteer for a few shifts until you can apply for a key and open the store yourself. There's lots of things to do around the store, so the more hands the better!
Know Your Rights With The Police
Monday, September 12
7-9 PM
When can the police stop me?
Where can they search?
And how can I answer an officer's questions?
Come find the answers to these and other questions at this educational event covering your rights when encountering the cops on the streets, in your car, at demonstrations, and on public transport.
Presented by Brian Harrison,
graduate from the University of Houston Law Center.
Friday Night Movie
"V for Vendetta"
Friday, September 16
8 pm
Not to be shown as a statement of our political ideology, we thought we'd show some blockbusters here to unwind on a Friday night.
While a favorite amongst many radicals, "V for Vendetta" does not come without controversy. After the movie we'll be talking about how the film portrays direct action, propaganda of the deed and struggle against fascism, as well as its celebration of "Supermen" and how it perpetuates traditional narratives with regards to the treatment of women.
Dinner and a Movie
"The Chicago Ten"
Wednesday, September 21
Dinner 7:30, Movie 8 pm
Blending archival footage with modern animation, this documentary examines the massive protests besetting the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention, and the courtroom trial of several activists and participants in the aftermath.
Among those featured are Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin, who were charged with inciting a riot, Tom Hayden, and Bobby Seale.
$5 suggested donation.
